About Art Galleries For Cairns

Today, the colourful landscapes of Cairns and Tropical North Queensland still inspire many established and emerging artists. A number of the artists on the National Australian comtemporary art scene are based in our vibrant art community in North Queensland.

We also have a rich history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and regularly showcase their visual art at local galleries.

Photographic artists have emerged as a predominant force in the local art scene and have opened many galleries that sell their images to the many visitors to this region. These artists capture the beauty of the landscape in all conditions and have galleries in Kuranda, Cairns and Port Douglas.

The Cairns Regional Gallery is located within a stately brick and stone heritage building on the corner of Abbott and Shields Streets. This heritage building was renovated in 1995 and features a cafe/restaurant and a Gallery Shop.

The Gallery exhibits work by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists as well as local fine arts and contemporary art and also hosts major Australian and international collections. You can visit the gallery from 10:00am to 5:00pm Monday to Saturday, and from 1:00pm to 5:00pm on Sunday.

There is also a Gallery shop offering a wide range of Australian ceramics, jewellery, books and cards.
