If you want to sleep on the Great Barrier Reef and wake up with a snorkel or dive while the fish are waking up this is the best!
You simply cannot beat getting out there amongst it. Why stay in a hotel when you can be literally sleeping on the Great Barrier Reef.
Cairns is the perfect jump off point for dive liveaboards. Here we have well established dive shops with excellent reputations for their quality equipment, professional service and safety records.
Cod Hole and Ribbon Reefs:
If you are serious about seeing the extraordinary beauty of the Great Barrier Reef make certain to visit relatively untouched areas such as the Cod Hole and Northern Great Barrier Reef. Allow yourself this awesome treat and head out on a dive expedition. This is an unforgetable life experience and you will know that this is the best diving in the world.
Our water clarity or visibility is generally between 15 and 25 metres with up to 30 metres visibility in September, October, November and December.
These months are considered prime dive season. Of course we need to take into account the tides, currents and winds but our Outer Great Barrier Reef really does have brilliant visibility year round.
If you are heading out to the Coral Sea the visibility is consistently excellent as it is so far from mainland Australia. 40 metres visibility is not unusual at Osprey Reef and Holmes.
The best time to dive the Great Barrier Reef is between August and December:
but you can dive here all year round. The water temperature ranges from 22 degrees in June rising to 28 in March. Although January, February and March are the warmest months they are also the wettest.
Dwarf minke whales are often seen on the Northern Reefs during May, June and July on these dive expeditions. We also occassionally have Humpback whale encounters which are extremely exciting and seem to be more commonly sighted during June, July and August.
There are limited departures each week for these fabulous liveaboard expeditions.
Taka departs every Tuesday for the 4 day 3 night Cod Hole with up to 30 passengers.
Spirit of Freedom departs every Thursday morning for the 4 day 4 night Coral Sea Adventure with up to 28 passengers returning Monday at 7am.
Taka departs every Friday for the 5 day 4 night Cod Hole and Coral Sea trip with up to 30 passengers.
Spirit of Freedom departs every Monday for the 4 day 3 night Cod Hole and Ribbon Reef adventure with up to 28 passengers.
Mike Ball Dive expeditions departs every Monday for the 3 day 3 night Cod Hole expedition
Mike Ball Dive expeditions departs every Thursday for the 4 night 4 day Coral Sea expedition.
All of these departures can be combined to create a 7 night itinerary on the same vessel but as you can see with only a small number of departures and small numbers these trips need to be booked well in advance.
Most dive expedition companies visiting the Coral Sea and the Cod Hole depart from Cairns twice a week.
These trips all have involved itineries sometimes combining a scenic flight to Lizard Island or steaming overnight. The boats are built for passenger comfort. A dive expedition is generally described as a trip up to the Cod Hole or to the Coral Sea or further afield. These trips generally take at least 3 nights and up to 10 nights.
Diving holidays are a great way to meet like minded travellers and enjoy the natural beauty of this magical underworld.
It must be extremely difficult for holidaymakers to get a true understanding of the Great Barrier Reef if they only visit one or two locations on a one day trip to the reef. As you can imagine the Great Barrier Reef is incredibly diverse and each bommie has it's own quirks and variances. Some areas are teeming with some fish while others have sea horses or, swim throughs or clam gardens. If you want to see the best of it go on one of these trips and you will never regret it. They are beyond compare.
