Cairns tours & travel

Oh how times do change. Once little more than a swamp considered a great place for collecting sea slugs, Cairns now serves as one of Australia’s main tourism hubs. These days, the city receives more than 2 million visitors each year – many of whom come for The Great Barrier Reef. And most of whom want to see more than sea slugs.

They’ve come to the right place. Covering more than 340,000 km2 (that’s bigger than Italy or Vietnam), The Great Barrier Reef is counted as one of the most biologically diverse habitats on the planet. Turtles, clownfish, manta rays, dugongs, gropers, reef sharks, humpbacks, dolphins and some pretty psychedelic coral – they all live here and are regularly sighted. If life on land is more your thing, there’s still plenty around Cairns to impress. Head north into the lush, tropical beauty of Port Douglas, Cape Tribulation and the Daintree, inland to the rainforest and waterfalls of the Atherton Tablelands, or travel to where the asphalt ends in Cooktown.

Reef to Rock Overland - 7 Days

Reef to Rock Overland

Get a fix of tropical Australia in Cairns and the Atherton Tablelands, then hit the road west through the Outback to Uluru and Kata Tjuta.

Cairns’ tropical coastline and the dusty expanses of the Red Centre might be two of Australia’s most visited traveller attractions, but very few ever make the journey between them by road. For most, the distance is just too long, the roads are a bit too rough and the stop-offs en route too lacking in renown. For others, these factors are precisely what excite.

Post getting your fix of tropical splendour in Cairns and the Atherton Tableland, hit the road west for tastes of genuine Outback culture at such little-known outposts as Hughenden, Winton, Porcupine Creek and Boulia. Get to know Alice Springs under your own steam, then spend a few days exploring by foot the boulders, gullies, canyons, chasms, ridges and ravines of Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park). This off-road adventure is for travellers wanting to know Australia both through and beyond its big name attractions.
