About the Wet Tropics Rainforest

Boardwalk at Skyrail Red Peak Station

The Wet Tropics World Heritage Area in Queensland, Australia, is a treasure trove of nature and culture. It's home to the oldest surviving tropical rainforest and the world's oldest living culture, tied to 20 Rainforest Aboriginal tribal groups.

Spanning from Townsville to Cooktown, this area covers 900,000 hectares, a tiny portion of Australia but a massive cradle of biodiversity. For 130 million years, it's been a living museum, showcasing the evolution of unique species.

This rainforest's survival over eons is thanks to a perfect storm of climate conditions: moisture, temperature, wind direction, and altitude. Even ice ages couldn't diminish its lush beauty.

Unique in the world, the Wet Tropics is where two natural World Heritage Sites converge: the rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. These two ecosystems share a deep, ancient connection, with the rainforest once stretching out to what is now the reef.

This area is not just a natural wonder but a testament to the resilience of our planet's ecosystems, a place where the past is alive and breathing.
