So... What exactly will happen on my Introductory Dive?
By Divers Den - Cairns
14 Dec 2021
So you know you’re going to get wet and blow bubbles – but apart from that what’s actually going to happen when you go diving? Will you get given some equipment and hope for the best?
Spoiler alert: of course not! Here’s all you need to know about your day.
- Paperwork
Yes we’re sorry but you need to do the boring stuff before the fun begins! As we’re a PADI company you’ll fill in their standard form, and complete the medical questionnaire. There are some medical conditions that you aren’t allowed to dive with (find information on that here) and it’s really, really important for your own safety and well being that you fill this out honestly.
- Briefing
On the way out to the reef your instructor will give you a briefing. This will include information about …. And more than a few terrible Dad jokes too – sorry! There are three dive skills you need to master before you swim off and find nemo and your instructor will tell you about those. You’ll also have the opportunity to ask questions and have a chat about exactly how the dive will operate. Our instructors have usually done hundreds, if not thousands, of dives like this so they know what they’re talking about.
- Set Up
About 20 minutes before your dive you’ll get into your equipment. Either your instructor or the dive supervisor will help you with this, enjoy feeling pampered and having someone dress you! Then you’ll run through the skills again in your dive gear.
- Entering the water
We have fancy hydraulic back steps meaning that there’s not need to jump in from a height – you can simply slide right in. One of your pieces of equipment is called a BCD (buoyancy control device) that can be filled with air meaning that you can float quite happily on the surface.
- Beginning the dive
We have stable bars that sit a couple of metres below the surface. Your instructor will help you descend really slowly down a line to the bar. You can then relax and spend a few moments getting used to the sensation of breathing underwater. Once your group are settled at the bar you’ll run through the three skills. There’s no rush at all here – because we don’t limit our dives to time you don’t need to rush and can take time to feel really comfortable.
- The dive!
Your instructor will ask you to hold on to their arm and get in a horizontal position. When everyone is happy it’s time to swim away and towards the reef in search on nemo, turtles and sharks! A dive will usually last around 30 minutes (on your first go you’ll find you breathe a bit faster than an experienced diver – totally normal) and you’ll have physical contact with your instructor at all times. This means you can let them do all of the hard work and concentrate on taking in the amazing underwater scenery!
You end the dive at the surface at the back of the boat, then you’ll have the rest of your day to snorkel and relax. There is usually the opportunity to complete another dive and our staff will always check if you’d like to afterwards.
So there you have it – exactly what happens when you do an introductory dive! Is there anything else you’d like us to answer?
